Is Rufus free?
Yes. The Free plan includes AI Shorts, local transcription, caption editing and export in four formats, with no expiration date. Just download Rufus.dmg and start.
What does the Pro plan add?
Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription that unlocks ads and campaigns with an AI agent, customizable animations, music clips, publishing to connected social accounts and priority support. Prices are in the plans section.
Will Rufus work on my computer?
The app is native to macOS 14 or later, with builds for Apple Silicon. The website works on any device; editing takes place on your Mac.
Do I need to upload my video for transcription?
No. Transcription uses Whisper on your Mac. AI analysis and creation features may send text and references to your chosen provider.
Which AI services can I use?
For text analysis, choose Claude Code, Codex or OpenRouter. Agent-created ads use Claude Code or Codex. Each service requires its own setup and is subject to your account's plan and limits.
What do I need to install to get started?
The app guides you through setting up ffmpeg, Whisper and the transcription model. YouTube links use yt-dlp. Animations and ads use Node.js and HyperFrames. See the download page for requirements.
Are there costs for AI services?
Local transcription and rendering use your computer. AI subscriptions, OpenRouter calls and optional HeyGen rendering follow those services' pricing, credits and limits.
Can I publish directly to social media?
There are integrations for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. Connect and configure your accounts first. Platform permissions and reviews may restrict publishing, including to private videos only.
